Plan for SU Town Hall Meeting on Fees

1. Introduction

  • What is a Town Hall Meeting?
  • How will this one work time limits per speaker etc.
  • How the SU makes new policies

2. Where have we come from?

The old mandate

  • Should we renew?
  • Should we use it as a starting point?
  • Or should we scrap it entirely and start from scratch?

3. Principles

This discussion will hopefully be a natural development of the previous policy. In order to create a new policy we have to decide what principles should inform it and, thus, what principles are held by Trinity students in relation to access to education.

Possible principles for discussion:

  • Free education
  • Third level education as a right
  • Access to education

4. Practicalities

A consideration of the practicalities of how to adequately fund third level education in Ireland could form part of our new policy on fees.

Possible practical considerations:

  • Means testing
  • Student loan system
  • Graduate tax

From the submissions made at this meeting  we will compile a report which will be distributed widely, conduct an e-survey based on the conclusions and continue with the consultation process generally.
