SU Structures
Trinity SU is structured to give every student the ability to get involved and to shape the policy and direction of the organisation. The various structures of the SU are explained in these pages.
Council
If you hear about the Students’ Union campaigning to have the Library hours extended or organising a protest for third level fees then this is because Class Reps have voted to commit the Students’ Union to certain policy in Council.
Students’ Union Council is where the decisions are made by your Class Reps on what actions the Union should take or what stance the Union should take on an issue.
Council is also a forum for and provides for direct communication between students and their elected representatives. All Sabbatical Officers are required to give a report to each Council and any student can ask questions to the Officers.
Faculty Assemblies
Here, the Faculty Convenors report on what they have been doing for students in their faculty and any student can come and ask questions of them. School Convenors also provide written reports for Assemblies. Any student can bring a discussion item to an Assembly on any topic on a wide range of issues.
Elections and Referendums
The Students’ Union holds many elections and referendums to decide the direction of the Union and to select the people that students want to work for them. If you feel that the Union isn’t doing something right or could be doing something better then bring a referendum to change it, or better yet, run for a position in the Union and change it yourself!
The SU holds elections for virtually all of its positions. School Convenors are elected at the last Faculty Assembly of the year, Class Reps are elected in October, with Class Rep training taking place soon after, and the Sabbatical Officer elections are held in February. You can’t miss them!
A referendum is the most powerful expression of the student body’s views and ideals. It can amend the Students’ Union constitution, or set policy on a particular matter. It is the best way for students to tell the SU what they want.
