Policies are “instructions” for what issues the Union should focus on or how Union officers should do their work. There are two types of Union policy:

  1. Mandated Policy: Mandates are enacted by SU Council and expire at the end of the second full academic year following the year of adoption, I.e. only elected Union members of Council can vote.
  2. Long-term Policy (LTP): Long-term policy is enacted by an LTP Referendum and doesn’t expire unless changed or removed by another LTP Referendum, I.e. all Union members can vote.

On the 18th October 2022, SU Council put forward to referendum an amendment of the existing “LTP 4: Sports Centre Levy” (enacted in 2015). If the referendum passes, the LTP 4 will change from:

Existing Wording

“TCDSU should support an increase in the existing Annual Sports Centre charge from €90 to €120 with the provision that;

  • Students with financial hardship would be exempt from the charge, as moder- ated by the Senior Tutor’s office.
  • The levy would be overseen by the SU and the Treasurer’s Office.”

To Proposed Wording

“TCDSU should support the continued collection of the Annual Sports Centre charge with the provision that;

  • Students with financial hardship would be exempt from the charge, as moderated by the Senior Tutor’s office.
  • The levy would be overseen by the SU and the Treasurer’s Office
  • College ceases to charge any booking fees and equipment charges for all sports facilities, classes and equipment.”

In accordance with the TCDSU Constitution, campaigning on the referendum began on Monday 23rd January at 10am.

Online voting starts on Monday 30 January at 9am

All TCDSU members who have registered to vote will receive an online voting link. You will be asked to vote “Yes” or “No” to the question “Do you agree to the proposed amendment to LPT 4: Sports Centre Levy?”

Online voting will close on Wednesday 1 February at 5pm

If at least a 60% majority votes “Yes”, the proposed wording will become Long-term Policy. The result of the referendum will be circulated via email on Thursday 2 February.
