If you’ll be in Trinity next year, have you thought about getting involved with TCDSU? Running for election is the best way to have a say in the issues we focus on. If you’re interested in social and environmental justice, or just want to help run the union, nominate yourself <3

You don’t need to have any experience with the union to run! I (Julie) ran for Citizenship Officer two years ago with absolutely no union background and it was the best decision I ever made. If you have any questions about a position, get in touch with the current officer using the emails listed below!

Union Forum + Commissions

Run for a Union Forum position at the last SU Council of the academic year! This will be held on Tuesday April 11th at 6.30pm in Ed Burke and online. It's important to flag that if you are elected to the Electoral/Oversight Commission, you are not allowed to hold another position in Council.

If you are a Class Rep, you are allowed to run for a Part-Time Officer or Faculty Convenor role!

Click here to learn more about the roles and meet the people currently in the roles!

Faculty Convenor

  1. AHSS Faculty Convenor and Deputy Faculty Convenor
  2. STEM Faculty Convenor and Deputy Faculty Convenor
  3. HS Faculty Convenor and Deputy Faculty Convenor

These roles are perfect if you are interested in defending students' academic rights to the College, organising Faculty Assembly meetings, and working with Class Reps/School Convenors to make sure that they know how to problem-solve at a local level. Faculty Convenors represent students to the University Council, their Faculty administration and their faculty’s Executive committee. They also sit on Union Forum, various sub-committees, and SU Council. Deputy Faculty Convenors act as a secretary to SU Faculty Assemblies and step in for Faculty Convenors in their absence.

Governance

  1. Electoral Commission Annual / Biennial Ordinary Members - This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  2. Oversight Commission Ordinary Members - This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

These roles are perfect if you are a detail-oriented person who is happy working away in the background to make sure that the union's elections and Council meetings run smoothly, and that its elected officers are fulfilling their mandates. The Commissions are the backbone of the union - without strong governance bodies the union wouldn't be able to function.

How Do I Run?
  1. Attend the last SU Council of the academic year on Tuesday April 11th at 6.30pm in the Ed Burke.
  2. At that meeting, if you are an elected member of Council you can put your hand up to propose you for election. That will be seconded by a Sabbatical Officer or one of the other Council members in attendance (you can ask someone to second you ahead of time if you like but you don't have to!). If you're not a member of Council you need to be both proposed and seconded by a member to run - but also you can just show up on the evening and people will always be happy to nominate you!
  3. If more than one person runs for the position, each candidate will be asked to speak for about a minute to explain why they want to run.
  4. After that, members of Council will vote via Single Transferable Vote (STV) for their preferred candidate. It's worth noting that some elections are restricted to certain constituencies, e.g. Faculty Convenors are elected by members of their faculty at Council, but you don't need to worry about that!

School and Programme Convenors

Any Trinity student can run to be a School/Programme Convenor at the last Faculty Assembly of the academic year! If you are a Class Rep, you are allowed to also run for School Convenor and/or Faculty Convenor or Deputy Faculty Convenor.

Click here for a full list of the schools in each faculty.

What Does a School/Programme Convenor Do?
  1. Represents the students of their constituency at the school’s executive committee meetings and at the school’s committee meetings.
  2. Reports to the Class Reps of their constituency on these meetings.
  3. Advises and assists the Faculty Convenor with the coordination of the Class Reps within that school.
  4. Advises and assists the Class Reps in the school on their representative work.
  5. Provides a crossover manual for their successor.
  6. Provides reports to their Faculty Assembly at least once in an academic year.
  7. Formulates union policy on their area of competency to be debated at Council.
