Health & Food

Balanced eating is hugely important in college life. This means getting all the nutrients you need in the right amounts. Too much or too little can leave us feeling groggy, fatigued, and unhappy - not what you need to live an active student life! Why not try these simple changes:

1.Don’t skip out on breakfast

Hop out of bed 10 minutes earlier and make sure to eat breakfast to fuel yourself up and kick start a good day.


2. Get yourself the right nutrients

Give your body the nutrients it needs by eating a variety of nutrient-packed food, including whole grains, lean protein, fruits and vegetables, and low-fat or fat-free dairy. Eat less food high in solid fats, added sugars, and sodium (salt).

3. Energize with grains (brown over white)


Your body’s quickest energy source comes from foods such as bread, pasta, oatmeal & cereals. Be sure to make at least half of your grain food choices whole-grain foods like whole-wheat bread or pasta and brown rice.


4. Vary your fruits and veg


Get the nutrients your body needs by eating a variety of colors. Try blue, red, or black berries; red and yellow peppers; and dark greens like spinach and kale.


5. Try out some healthier snacks


Opt in for some healthier snacks to munch on in between lectures and your college day. Popcorn, fruits, yoghurts, seeds, and nuts are a great and tasty alternative to sugary snacks and will prevent mid-day fatigue and sugar crashes.


6. Drink lots of water


Water is super important! Stay hydrated by drinking water instead of sugary drinks. Keep a reusable water bottle with you to always have water on hand.


7. It’s all about balance


Remember that it’s completely fine to indulge in your favourite snack from time to time especially if you’re making an effort to eat healthier during the week.

The benefits of being active for your physical and mental health are huge and is important for a healthy and happy lifestyle. So why not try some of the options below:

 1. Start walking or cycling 

 If you live near the campus, walking or cycling are great ways to get active while reducing your travel costs. There are a lot of second-hand bikes available in the Dublin area as well as the Dublin bike system. Keep an eye out for the cycle to college promotions throughout the year. 


 2. Join a sports club

 Joining a sports club is a great way to get active, challenge yourself, make new friends and have a ton of fun. With over 50 sports clubs in Trinity, there is something for everyone. For more info check out the Student Sports Guide at


 3. Join the Trinity Sports centre

 As a TCD student, you can avail of free membership to the Trinity Sports centre which includes: a fitness theatre, fitness studio, spin room, 25m pool, climbing wall, indoor basketball court and an indoor soccer court. To register as a member, simply pop into the reception in the sports centre.

Additionally, all students can avail of a discounted fee for all sport centre classes which include studio cycle, boxfit, bootcamp, hip hop, cardio, and strength classes. You can find the full list of classes available and more info at


 4. Get involved in recreational activities 

 There are loads of fun and exciting recreational activities ran by the Students Union and Trinity Sport to get involved in. Keep an eye out for our campus runs, glow in the dark activities, sports days, and themed weeks. You can also grab some friends and enjoy yourself using the tennis courts in Botany Bay or the climbing wall in the sports centre.


 5. Challenge yourself

 Everything starts out with small steps so challenge yourself in small ways to kick start a healthy lifestyle. E.g. walk once a week, one week without sweets, try a new healthy snack every week, do 10 push ups a day etc.
